July brings thoughts of fabulous fireworks, sun-drenched swimming pools, and summer camps. But did you know July is National Park and Recreation month? According to National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), this year’s theme is “Where You Belong” – celebrating the many ways park and recreation professionals foster a sense of belonging in their community by providing welcoming and inclusive programs, essential services for all ages and abilities, and safe, accessible spaces to build connections. Since 1985, the United States has celebrated Park and Recreation month to promote building strong, vibrant, and resilient communities through parks and recreation.
Aidan Damo is a youth athletic coach for Palatine Park District. “As a sports instructor of Sportskids Inc, I have learned that teaching or coaching sports classes at the park district is not just about the skills or the X’s and O’s of the game, it’s also about creating relationships that transcend beyond the field,” Damo said. “It’s about inspiring kids and families to be in touch with their curiosity for sports and turn their curiosity into a love that lasts forever and can be shared with other kids and families just like them. Creating relationships and exploring passions are what the park district has provided me – enhancing my quality of life as both a coach and as an individual in the community.”
Palatine Park District was established in 1945 and celebrates its 80th Anniversary in 2025. The district provides a variety of safe, enjoyable, and affordable parks, programs, and recreational facilities to the community. Outdoor recreation options include 45 parks, including a disc golf course, skate park, and dog park. Palatine Hills Golf Course offers a par 72 championship course that challenges golfers of all skill levels. Residents and visitors enjoy over 11 miles of the Palatine Trail which extends throughout the district. Palatine Park District offers programs like fitness, cultural arts, early childhood programs, sports, gymnastics, and a wide variety of classes for both children and adults. The park district operates Birchwood Recreation Center, Clayson House Museum & Library, Community Center, Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center, Falcon Park Recreation Center, and the Health and Recreation Center Pool at Harper College.
Palatine Park District is a member of a 17-park district cooperative which forms the Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA). Individuals have the opportunity to make friends, have fun, go new places, learn new things, be included and celebrate their lives!
The services that park and recreational professionals provide are vital to our communities – from protecting open spaces and natural resources to helping fight obesity and providing activities and resources for all people. Lisa Imbordino is a Palatine Park District fitness instructor. “My time as a fitness instructor with the Palatine Park District has been an experience of a fun-loving and supportive community,” she said. “Our classes and fitness facilities offer members different ways to challenge themselves and improve all elements of fitness. The fitness community we offer supports our members throughout their wellness journey and it is amazing to see the bonds members form with each other and with instructors. Movement is very important for health and enhanced quality of life. When you add connection, support, community, fun, great music, and smiles to your routine, your health and quality of life improve even more.”
According to NRPA’s Engagement with Parks Report, people place a high value on the programs and services that park and recreation agencies deliver to their local communities and support their mission. Molly Kelly, 14, recently participated in the district’s youth theatre program at Cutting Hall. “In theatre I love the idea of the community working together toward the common goal of the production. Being on the stage has become a second home to me.” Grace Czyzowicz, 13, said “I like doing theatre because of the friendships you form. I was a reserved kid, and it has brought me out of my shell.” Chaya Navaneetham ,14, has found a support system in the theatre. “I have been a part of the theatre program at Palatine Park District for seven years. I have gotten to know the teachers and directors and they are all super supportive.” Julie Price, Palatine Youth Theatre Director said, “These musical theatre skills help to build creativity and confidence in self-expression in a supportive and collaborative environment.”
From across the plush greens of Palatine Hills Golf Course to the stage at Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center, Palatine Park District offers the spaces, places, and programs...”Where You Belong”.
