Palatine Park District is bringing everyone’s favorite pineapple-dwelling sea sponge and his best underwater pals to the stage in The SpongeBob Musical!
This wacky adventure to Bikini Bottom will have eight shows to choose from, taking place at Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center (150 E Wood St.):
The SpongeBob Musical will dive down into the world of Bikini Bottom, where it’s discovered that a volcano will erupt and destroy their beloved home. With eminent destruction on the horizon, it’s up to an unlikely hero to save the day in this all-singing, all-dancing, underwater stage show!
While Patrick may be the Super Sea Star Savior of this hit, tony award-winning Broadway sensation, the soundtrack also features a star-studded lineup with songs from Cyndi Lauper, David Bowie, T.I., Panic! At the Disco, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and so many more!
With so many musical legends behind it, this nautical undertaking required bringing another hand on deck through Tristan Ramos, Music Director of The SpongeBob Musical. When Ramos isn’t working with the SpongeBob cast, he works as a music teacher and all-around performer in Chicago.
Despite being “fully overloaded” with his job and other production opportunities, when Ramos heard about the opportunity, he knew this show was calling him.
As someone who works mostly with children, Ramos was intrigued by the idea of working with an all-adult cast. “It’s a new experience, something I’ve never really done before,” he said.
For some actors, this show gives them the chance to reminisce on their family’s love of the original cartoon. Dwight Brown, who plays The Mayor of Bikini Bottom, smiles as he remembers his daughter singing the theme song as a child. “To be involved in something now that I can share with my children is a beautiful thing,” Brown said.
Many members of the cast have been fans of the show since childhood, helping them bring the world of SpongeBob to life on stage. “If you come, you’ll be like mmm…that’s Patrick…yep, that’s Mr. Krabs, right there,” Ramos joked, having been surprised at how well the actors immerse themselves into their roles.
As the cast continues to rehearse before their debut in March, Ramos is proud of how this cast has dived into this show. “You have to be all-in and sell it because they [SpongeBob characters] are so iconic,” Ramos said. “This cast really does a great job going 100% with their characters and the music.”
If you still need convincing on why you should come to see The SpongeBob Musical, Ramos says, “You should come see The SpongeBob Musical because The Sponge ROCKS! It’s a fun show, fun people and it’ll be a great and wonderful time.”
This show is sure to be the Best Day Ever so make sure to secure a spot for this can’t miss adventure!
